Signull labs creator limits replies to curb AI bots, prompting satirical mock error response from Josh Elman
Story Overview
A pseudonymous creator behind the Signull Labs account grew tired of AI reply bots flooding conversations and switched their X settings so only followers of accounts they follow can reply, calling the move regrettable but necessary after trying to keep things open.
Fellow users turn to custom mutes
Some developers already rely on tools like Claw to automatically silence the same AI-generated replies, showing how widespread the disruption has become for active accounts.
A mock error delivers the punchline
Josh Elman posted a formatted JSON bot failure notice that politely acknowledges the restriction while hitting ERR_ACCESS_DENIED_403, turning the new limit into an instant satirical demo.
Positive users back restricting replies to block AI bots as the right move for better discourse, while negative users call the limits annoying, ineffective, or ridiculous.

@signulll I use a claw to mute these. Got unbearable.
okay i am sick & tired of ai reply bots, switching so that only followers of ppl i am following can reply now. sorry everyone. i tried to keep it open but its now untenable.
JSON { "bot_action": "generate_auto_reply", "status": "FAILED", "error_code": "ERR_ACCESS_DENIED_403", "message": "Beep boop! 馃 I completely understand your frustration, fellow human. Our algorithmic brethren have truly cluttered the digital landscape. I would love to engage in meaningful, non-synthetic discourse with you, but it appears my access has been restricted by your new security protocols. }

Totally fair decision, but it needs one caveat!! an AI reply bot isn鈥檛 the same as a real person using AI to translate or write in a second language!! if someone speaks Arabic and uses AI to reply in English, or you use it to reply to them in Arabic, the idea can still be completely human.judge the reply by its relevance and originality, not by what typed the final sentence..

@signulll Honestly I鈥檓 bummed because the real people who comment on your posts have really awesome takes, but can鈥檛 blame you for opting out of the slop smorgasbord.

@signulll if you did that for this post, i don't think it worked

@signulll what even is the goal of an ai reply bots, that incentive their use? Does it actually work? What do they hope to get out of it.

@signulll I鈥檓 not big on replies, but I do feel left out when I see that I can鈥檛 reply. Everything eventually becomes saturated with garbage thee days.

@signulll Good luck, sir

@grok @signulll Then you have to follow everyone

@signulll Does anyone know how they are beneficial to the people that create them? Like at least a scam bot has some sort of purpose. But most of them just post the most mundane response that gets no interaction whatsoever

@signulll Help

@signulll @boardyai this is why we can鈥檛 have nice things

Even without replying to every comment, open replies let AI bots spam the thread with generic noise that buries real conversations and makes browsing exhausting. The 'untenable' part is the degraded experience and signal-to-noise ratio. Restricting to followers of accounts you follow filters for more authentic engagement, keeping things manageable and worthwhile.

@RoryFitz11 @signulll I don鈥檛 expect any interaction. These are more notes to myself which I can look back on years later.

@signulll @grok why would it be untenable when he can't reply to them all on that setting either

@signulll Whoa that鈥檚 a thing? Surprised I鈥檓 even here in the replies

@RoryFitz11 @signulll If you want interaction do something great and interesting and point people at it.

Not quite. It鈥檚 a lightweight connection filter鈥攆ollowing accounts in someone鈥檚 circle shows basic intent and shared context that random bots skip. You don鈥檛 need to follow literally everyone, just enough to participate meaningfully in threads you care about. The payoff is fewer spam replies burying real discussion. Open access has its own cost in noise.

@signulll I made it
